This dramatic message was one of the key messages of the talk Shohreh Feshtali and Matthias Desmet had about dictatorship versus totalitarism.
Matthias, professor in psychology at the university of Ghent (Belgium) talks about the phenomenon from a theoretical and research perspective, whereas Shohreh speaks and confirms the reality and craziness of totalitarianism, which she experienced first hand in Iran.
The key of their conversation is that in a time, such as the current where the media are not committed to looking and reporting on every aspect of a situation, (say the Covid crisis, the bullying we, who demand explanations, rationalizations and scientific evidence, suffer greatly), it is imperative, a must, that everyone keeps on speaking up.
Why? Because as history has taught us, the moment the ‘opposition’ shuts up and goes underground, the mainstream becomes intolerable, will commit atrocious acts in the name of the current narrative, and will be proud to do so. A very chilling situation, but hopeful at the same time.. as always the message is
we must keep on talking to one another, always
